The Spice scale

Shop by how spicy you want it

Big Z rates every animal 1 to 5 for care difficulty, temperament and venom before it goes on the site. Pick a level to see what it actually looks like.

Choose a Spice level

Spice is Big Z's shopping guide, not a safety rating. Read the animal's full care notes before you buy. How the Spice scale works

Candy Corn Pill Millipede (Rhopalomeris carnifex), group with extended and curled bodies

Keeper's pick of the week

Candy Corn Pill Millipede

Rhopalomeris carnifex - mixed sizes

Touch it and it folds shut into a sealed armored ball, and that is the whole defense. No bite, no sting, nothing on it that pinches. It is a true millipede, not a pill bug. Pill bugs are crustaceans that happen to roll the same way. Feed the substrate, not the animal. Give it a deep bed of well decayed hardwood leaf and soft crumbly rotted wood over something that holds moisture, because that bed is also the food. Keep it damp under the surface and never dripping, leave the lid ventilated, and top the bed up before it runs out. Room temperature, no heat mat. Spice 1, Kid Safe.

The Big Z promise

Live animals, shipped right

Buying a live invertebrate online shouldn't feel like a gamble. Here's what every Big Z's order gets you.

Live arrival guarantee

Every live order ships under a written guarantee. If your animal arrives deceased and the claim conditions are met, Big Z makes it right with a replacement or store credit. Read the guarantee.

We hold for the weather

We check the forecast in Phoenix, at your address, and at the hubs in between, and hold the box free of charge when the route is not safe. Insulated box plus a heat or cold pack, included. How shipping works.

A real keeper, not a call center

Not sure what to pick? Big Z answers personally, usually the same day. No bots, no script. Ask before you order.

Before you order

The questions everyone asks

Short answers here, and the binding version one click away. If yours is not on the list, ask before you buy rather than after.

Ask Big Z something else
How do you ship live animals?
Live orders go out Monday through Wednesday only, so nothing sits at a carrier facility over a weekend. Boxes are insulated and packed for the route, with a heat or cold pack when the forecast calls for one. Big Z checks the weather in Phoenix, at your address, and at the hubs in between before anything leaves. See how shipping works.
What happens if my animal arrives dead?
That is what the Live Arrival Guarantee is for. Send the photos and video it asks for inside the claim window and Big Z makes it right with a replacement or store credit. The guarantee page is the binding version and lists the conditions, the remedies, and what voids it, so read it before you order rather than after. Read the Live Arrival Guarantee.
It is too hot or too cold where I live. Will you still ship?
No, and that is on purpose. If temperatures anywhere along the route fall outside a safe band, roughly below 40F or above 95F, we hold the order at no extra charge and email you. A hold we call never voids your guarantee. Waiving a hold or a pack we recommended does.
What does the Spice number mean?
Every animal is rated 1 to 5 before it goes on the site. Spice 1 Kid Safe is the calmest temperament and the simplest care. Spice 5 Extreme means medically significant venom or serious defensive speed. The number rolls up care difficulty, temperament and risk so you can shop at your own comfort level. It is a shopping guide, not a safety rating, so read the animal's care notes too. Learn the Spice system.
Which enclosure does my animal need?
Match the box to the species, not to the price. Ground dwellers want floor space, climbers want height, and diggers want enough substrate depth to hold a tunnel. Every Big Z's enclosure lists its inside dimensions, and the setup guide walks through choosing one and furnishing it. Read the enclosure setup guide.
I have never kept one before. Where should I start?
Start in Spice 1 or Spice 2, read the care guide before you buy, and have the enclosure ready before the animal ships. If it is a tarantula you are after, the beginner guide ranks the ones actually worth starting on and says why. See the best beginner tarantulas.
